Melanie Johnson and Pierce Johnson: I
grew up riding dressage and I am so happy to be back in the
saddle! I had stopped riding to go to medical school at Mayo and
finish a family practice residency. My husband, Geoff, and I had
four children during that time, so we really had our hands full.
When I was ready to start riding again, I wasn't really sure
where to begin. I interviewed several stables in the area and
Turn Crest was head and shoulders above the others. These are
genuine horse people! The owner/operator Vicki Holst is a
terrific coach for people at all levels. She is supportive of
the little ones and brings out the competitive drive in the
middle and high school set. It has been a great ride so far and
renting Joe (aka: our fuzzy buddy) allows my oldest son, Pierce,
a chance to learn the sport without the financial commitment and
pressure of owning a horse. Pierce and I have really bonded
while out on the farm and he loves having a sport/skill that
his athletic father can't "coach!" Pierce seems to have decided
this is HIS sport, and he really doesn't do any others
anymore. He also sings in the church choir, does bells, plays
piano and builds Legos for fun. He wants to be a scientist,
businessman, own his own company, and invent things when he
grows up.

I love
practicing family medicine at Olmstead Medical Center. If I had
spare time I would read or do photo albums of my kids, but I am
too busy taking them to all their enriching activities and doing
laundry! ("Wow Mom, you must really love doing laundry because
you do it ALL the time!" Pierce at age 7 hahaha) If you are
thinking about getting into horses, this stable is the place to
be. I would highly recommend Turn Crest to anybody interested in
improving rusty skills, taking it to the next level, or learning
the basics of horsemanship! If you are a parent who has never
ridden, but have a child who will not stop pestering you about
taking lessons, this stable is the one for you. Vicki Holst
teaches all the lessons herself, so your child will learn the
correct way of doing things from the very start. She and her
very friendly staff (along with the other parents at the stable)
will help guide you through the unfamiliar world of
horsemanship. Vicki fosters a fun, co-operative atmosphere among
the kids (i.e.: NOT a snobby stable). Turn Crest has a
supportive environment which emphasizes discipline,
self-confidence, independence and athleticism through sport. We
are having a great time!
